Nano Coating Systems develop new low-cost process for SiOx plasma barrier coating of plastics
Post date : 10/02/2006

Nano Coating Systems of Fremont, CA have developed a new low-cost process for SiOx plasma barrier coating of plastics. This new process will help convert more containers to plastics from glass and metal packages.

Nano Coatings system uses radio frequency (RF) energy to generate the plasma instead of the conventional approach of using microwaves. This approach results in lower costs and simplified operation for coating the inside of plastic containers.

Nano Coatings President Bill Liggett said the new barrier process is expected to cost less than US$6/1000 bottles. The system has proven effective at improving the barrier of PET bottles, polypropylene bottles, and injection molded items like medical disposables.

As part of the product launch, Nano Coating Systems have selected Husky Injection Molding Systems, Bolton, Ont., for distribution of the machinery. Nano Coating will be responsible for marketing and application review while Husky will handle commercial matters, start-up, service and spare parts.
